I've had personal experiences at the Dover. I lived there for about 2 months in 2006/2007. There were noises from the attick which seemed to be unexplained, like crying from a child or something. Lights have gone on and off for no reason, even in the main pub itself after close and alarms have been set. The strangest one was during a lock-in myself, and 2 other friends saw a shadow behind the bar and felt scared to death of moving upstairs as it would have meant going behing the bar to get there. Something seemed to be stopping us as the presence did not seem too friendly. Strange noises came from the kitchen on this night also, more crying and a bell sound. Like it was ringing for a very short moment. We had a dog there that seemed to go nuts occasionally and chase things that weren't there and bark at nothing also. I'm not sure about any history to the place, although I know it is the oldest gay-bar in the UK. I have heard rumours a man killed his wife and child here, but that may only be heresay. I've also heard an old landlady or landlord (can't remember which) had a heartattack on one of the seats downstairs in the 1980s, which I believe to be true.
Sorry it is all a bit vague
