Abbey Pumping Station, next to the National Space centre is a museum of science and technology.Opened in 1891,it originally pumped Leicester's sewage to the treatment works at Beaumont Leys.It closed in 1964,but was preseved because of the magnificent Victorian engineering on display in the four beam steam engines that were used to pump the sewage.Three of these have been restored to working condition. The pumping station now holds special steam events and has exhibitions on light and optics, historic transport and public health.
