Ghosts of Hellens Empty

Perhaps the most famous haunting surrounding Hellens Manor is that of Hetty Walwyn, who returned to the family home in disgrace after a failed whirlwind marriage. The condition of her return was that she was never to leave her room again. She remained locked up for the rest of her life, given just a bell for means of summoning servants, and she eventually went mad. Her room is probably the creepiest in the house, visitors can still see the verse she etched into the window back in the 1700's. Her ghost is undoubtedly one of the strongest and most active spirits at the Manor, indeed the current curator has witnessed her on occasion, just standing there for several minutes before slowly fading away.

It is said that paranormal activity got so bad during Victorian times that servants refused to stay in the house overnight. One of the major hauntings during this time was a hooded figure who would wake people in the middle of the night by constantly pacing back and forth in their rooms. There was also a gentleman who stayed at the house in the 1920's who left in annoyance after he kept being woken by a 'dotty old member of the family'. Of course, there was no-one else staying there at the time...

Another ghost that resides at Hellens is that of an eldery Catholic priest that was sheltered by the family when Catholicism was outlawed. Soldiers raided the home and found the priest who fled upstairs to avoid them. He was cornered in Queen Mary's room (so named because Mary Tudor stayed in it) and hacked him to death.
