Guildhall report part 1 22nd May 09
The Guildhall Leicester .
Pre-Investigation:-
We arrived at our location the guild hall Leicester on Friday 22nd May 2009 at 7:00pm. We had a brief chat regarding the guild and some of its history and Lee introduced himself and gave details of where the evenings investigation would be taking place and what sort of experiments we would be trying out that evening.
During the initial introduction several people heard a screeching noise and what appeared to sound like a dragging sound coming from inside the building with that Lee decided it would be a good time to do a walk round before opening us up.
Walk round:-
We started the walk round in the great hall of the guild this is a large room which features high beamed ceiling and a large stone fire place. The ceilings are detailed with paintings and wording which would have had great significance during the guilds past. The great hall is the original part of the hall and has been extended throughout its time and many of these different types of styles and features are clearly seen and only add to the halls remarkable character.
The great hall had many uses during the years and was once Leicester’s main town hall and also a court house and police head quarters.
There is a stage area at the far end of the hall and placed on the stage is a judges chair and table over looked by a panelled wall partition that would have opened up for the jury to be seated and used as an early form of witness protection.
At the opposite side of the room was a stair case which lead up to a balcony area and the recorders bedroom and the library area.
While Lee was giving everyone a talk about the halls history one man complained he felt quite unusual and dizzy and yet had felt fine until entering the great hall.
Lee then lead everyone into the Mayors parlour. This is a large wooden panelled room with large portraits of previous mayors of Leicester hanging on the walls.
Also there was a huge fireplace painted very colourfully and a chandelier hanging from the ceiling.
There was wooden seating around the edge of the room located under the windows and a small set of steps that had a door leading back into the great hall.
The far end of the room was another small room which is now used for storage. During our time within this room a couple of people complained of feeling very sick .
We then made upstairs to the jury room. This room was the same size as the mayors parlour and also contained a large fireplace and a doorway leading to a set of stairs that were the access route for the attic area above.
The room had a large table in the centre surrounded by chairs and many old book cabinets on the outer edge of the room. Lee shown us the panelled partition we had seen from the great hall and told us that in past investigations those doors had been opened and that during the last investigation held in this room some chairs had been moved around and appeared to be balancing on each other.
We then went into the library located on the first floor of the guild and is said to be one of the oldest libraries in the UK. In the centre of the room was a large wooden table and around the outside were cabinets containing old books and several old chests and writing desk and chair. At the end of the room was a stone fireplace and a doorway into another small room which contained more cabinets.
While standing in this room myself and my sister who had accompanied us on our investigation became feeling very strange I felt very off balance and dizzy and we seemed to be losing our footing at the same time it was a very strange sensation and it must have looked like we’d had one too many drinks.
Lee finished his talk about the library and informed the team that one phenomena was that the old bible changed pages when no one was in the room. After setting the bible back on the chest it was positioned on we decided to head down to the cells.
The cells are set at the far end of the guild and one cell was accessible and contained two wax dummies that of a woman and child. The cell was very small and Lee told us that it is noted up to 17 people once shared that cell so it would not have been pleasant. While Lee continued to tell everyone about the cells a few of us got a strange smell that seemed to manifest from nowhere. I thought it smelled quite clinical but others described it as urine. Whatever the smell it left as soon as it arrived and had us baffled.
The far end of the cell area we had a table placed in front of a large stone fireplace area for an experiment we would do later in the evening.
We decided to head back to the safe room which was located in the guilds café before taking a rare look around the cottage within the building which until recently was once the museums shop.
The cottage was now used as offices and storage and Lee told us that staff often heard footsteps on the stairs here.
The living room area had a fire place and a small room of the left which was the coal house.
While in this room several people complained of yet again feeling dizzy and sick and one lady became overwhelmingly hot and had to step out of the room.
Lee swapped places with one lady and said he actually felt quite heady there and quickly moved away from the space.
We headed up stairs and into a one of the 3 rooms up stairs this room again was very uneven and Sarah described it as being on a boat. A few of the group didn’t like the atmosphere in this room and so after a short stat we made our way into the last room of the cottage located at the far end of the landing.
This room was felt very much colder than the other rooms accept for one man who complained of feeling very odd and hot.
Many of the group said they felt a little intimidated in this room and as though they shouldn’t be there. I actually felt fine in this room and did not share the uneasy feeling that others appeared to be picking up on. We thought that with so many people having experiences like this before even being opened up we should have a break then open up and begin our investigation of the guildhall Leicester.
Investigation:-
Vigil 1:- Great Hall:
Before opening up Lee asked for everyone to find a spot in the room they felt most drawn too if they felt anything at all. I felt at this point I was drawn towards the main door into the hall and stood with my back to the door facing everyone else.
Some of the group moved towards the stage area while others went towards the staircase and a few stood still in there original spaces feeling they were not drawn to any particular place at all.
Lee then opened everyone up and said he heard someone say to him that “she isn’t here” and a loud noise almost like wood on wood was heard very clearly.
Lee asked everyone to move to the area they felt drawn too myself moving towards the stage alone and standing on the edge facing the group. Three of the group stood on the balcony area and Sarah stood at the top of the staircase.
Other members of the group stood scattered around the room. It was pointed out that the room seemed to be divided and those who had originally stood one end of the room had completely changed sides now they had been opened up.
Lee asked how everyone felt one man standing on the balcony said he felt very angry and frustrated along with another woman. Although the other lady on the balcony felt quite happy. Why Lee was calling out I had what sounded like a mans voice grunt and this added to the extreme unease I was feeling standing on the stage.
Lee then pointed out that Ryan had become very cheeky looking and seemed to be smirking at the gentleman on the balcony and yet when asking Ryan he explained he felt like it was quite a smug smirk and he felt quite happy to be annoying the man on the balcony who had found Ryan’s smirk quite frustrating.
This was completely out of character for Ryan who is usually a very quite and introvert character and isn’t the sort of person who takes pleasure in irritating others around him.
Why this conversation was taking place I felt more uneasy and my heart was pounding and was just praying I could move off the stage and away from whatever it was making me feel so on edge.
Lee then said he felt drawn to the library and asked Sarah if she and the people on the stage would go check the library.
Upon entering the library Sarah let out a surprised shriek and shouted for everyone to go and look in the library.
Once in the library the whole group was shocked to find the old writers chair balancing on the edge of the large table on its front legs leaning forwards. This was a total shock to all the group as everyone was accounted for when leaving the library during the walk round and the chair was not in that position at that point.
When the shock had subsided Lee thought it would be a good idea to go back into the great hall and do a small experiment to see how opened up the group now was. With 2 out of 3 of the experiments having a positive result Lee confirmed the group had opened up well and had decided that we should call out.
With the group sitting in a circle some of the group again became very frustrated and angry yet Ryan became more and more smug much to the annoyance of some of the frustrated members of the group. One man commented that he had seen a shadow on the steps and another man seen a shadow move behind his chair.
Lee asked for the spirit to come closer to the circle and said the spirit answered with “ you have got to be joking.”.
Then a stone was thrown and Val had her ear pulled and my leg felt as though it was touched.
Lee said he was picking up on a malicious character who was enjoying winding up the angry members of the group and this was the reason for Ryan’s behaviour.
Many cold blasts of air were felt and the temperature seemed to go up and down quite rapidly.
Lee decided he would check the area with an EMF monitor. This seemed to go wild around one side of the room and when Lee asked the spirit to swap sides and move over the other side of the group the EMF monitor then picked up a lot of activity from the other side of the group when asked.
One man felt drawn to the judges chair and as he was the same man who had been very frustrated on the balcony earlier during the investigation Lee suggested he went and sat in the chair.
Once the man sat down he said he felt a lot calmer there yet still frustrated with Ryan.
The man commented that he didn’t feel alone on the stage so Lee joined him and agreed there was a spirit on the stage also. Some members of the group could see the mans features change one of his legs seemed to vanish and he grew a beard.
We then decided that with the amount of activity we had experienced within the great hall it may be worth moving onto our next location the mayors parlour and see what was held in store here.
Vigil 2:-Mayors parlour:
When entering the room most of the group sat around a large table that had been set up in the middle of the room. A lady volunteer laid on top of the table facing the ceiling while Ryan went to do a lone vigil in the small storage room.
With the remaining members of the group sitting on the outer edge of the room we began to call out to the spirits within the room.
Myself asking out for the spirits to make there presence known footsteps and banging from the room above (jury room) could be heard. We knew this room was empty and locked and all people accounted for within the group so the noise came as a great surprise.
I called out again and this time more banging was heard and a stone was thrown that seemed to bounce and hit the floor.
Lee then called out to Ryan to check how he was getting on in the storage room with Ryan informing the group he could here a murmuring sound and a white light was seen.
With the noises above continuing Lee asked out again for the spirits to touch Ryan in the other room which Ryan later confirmed he shoulder was touched on demand. Shortly after this the room seemed to become lighter and a shower of stones were thrown hitting and startling several members of the group.
Lee joined the table and the group put there hands on the table and called out with the table jolting in response. We quickly became aware that Lee had become very quiet and so Sarah asked for the spirit to respond to us.
The spirit introduced himself as” William Herrick” and he was looking for “little Rosie a sweet girl” he told the group before hitting the top of the table very loudly and making everyone jump out of there skin.
William took great delight in the panic he caused and found it very amusing laughing out loud then singing “ring a ring a roses” William told the group one lady resembled Rosie and told her to go to the fields. He then looked down at his hands and placed them on the tables and commented on the lady to his lefts rings.
Sarah asked if William was going to do anything for us and he said he had already done it and laughed.
William then told everyone they were going to die soon . One lady commented that the spirit couldn’t hurt us and William just laughed and said I will get you later and then started to admire portrait on the wall which Sarah confirmed was in fact William Herrick himself. William said he needed Rosie to write his will and when Sarah asked if he was about to die he said “soon “ and began to choke.
Sarah asked William if anyone else was in the room but had noticed one female around the table appeared very skeletal and withdrawn. William agreed and said” Mary is here she is bad and deserves her punishment”
William began to say a prayer and a few members of the group became tired and felt very strange with one member of the group reporting a taste of blood in there mouth and the smell of chloroform.
Sarah asked William if he had any questions for us and he just said “ why?” Sarah asked if Mary wanted to speak and he said “ no”.
We decided that Lee had been gone for quite a while and thought it would be a good idea to bring him back and take a break before going onto our next location the cells.
